Thesis update
Feedstock risk improves — but our allocation discipline does not change
New crude-purchase data removes one important concern at today’s scale. The investment thesis strengthens modestly, but the main valuation and expansion-funding questions remain.
Strategic asset quality ≠ financial attractiveness at any price
Current-capacity feedstock risk has improved. Expansion-scale feedstock risk has not been solved. At 1.4m bpd, the refinery would require roughly 511 million barrels a year at full utilisation.
What changed
Reuters reported that the refinery secured at least 16 million barrels of Nigerian crude for October, alongside WTI Midland supply. The sourcing mix combines NNPC allocations, tendered Nigerian grades and imported Atlantic Basin crude.
What the new data tells us
- October contracted volumes already cover roughly three-quarters of 700 kbpd reference capacity before further purchases.
- August Nigerian deliveries reached about 565 kbpd, nearly double the prior-year average cited by Reuters.
- Management is using several sourcing channels rather than depending on one domestic allocation mechanism.
- The coastal location gives the refinery access to international crude when Nigerian supply is tight.
What it does not prove
- That crude will always be available at attractive delivered prices.
- That Nigeria can supply enough domestic crude for a future 1.4m-bpd complex.
- That imported crude will preserve the same margins as local barrels.
- That strong 2026 refining margins represent a normal cycle.
- That expansion funding and governance risks have improved.
Investment thesis
Strategic asset quality remains VERY STRONG. Current feedstock availability improves, while expansion feedstock, expansion financing and governance remain material risks.
The IPO valuation at ₦525 remains attractive, not cheap. Better operating confidence does not automatically widen the margin of safety.
Decision
Current action: HOLD PLANNED ALLOCATION. Confidence in participating has risen modestly; confidence in buying aggressively at ₦525 has not.
